But the 28-year-old midfielder repaid Dunga's faith with a commanding display.
He provided a moment of rare skill when he deftly controlled a Neymar through ball and coolly rounded Fernando Muslera to score Brazil's second goal.
Augusto's performance showed he meant what he said when he told reporters last week that he "didn't go to China for holiday".
It also added weight to the consensus that China will be home to an increasing number of elite players with ambitions for success at both club and international level.
